As the hospital grew, so did The Ladies Board’s commitment. Between 1926 and 1936, members maintained a residence for nurses-in-training, helping support the next generation of caregivers. Over the decades, The Ladies Board contributed funding for hospital expansions, renovations, and improvements that strengthened healthcare access across the region. In 1996, the Board proudly committed its support to the development of the new hospital campus in Lansdowne, now known as Inova Loudoun Hospital.

Today, The Ladies Board continues its longstanding tradition of service through fundraising, community outreach, volunteerism, and nursing scholarships that benefit those who live and work in Loudoun County. Support for these efforts comes through cherished community programs and initiatives, including the Annual Rummage Sale, established in 1926; the Twice Is Nice thrift shop in Leesburg; the Riverside Gift Shop located at the Lansdowne campus; the Lights of Love remembrance program; and the Polly Clemens Nursery Fund.

Funds raised directly support nursing scholarships and the hospital’s Greatest Needs, established in 2008. In 2025 alone, The Ladies Board awarded $186,600 in nursing scholarships to help educate and inspire future healthcare professionals. In partnership with the hospital foundation, providing critical support for equipment, technology, and patient care resources across hospital departments.

The Ladies Board fulfilled a landmark $1 million pledge in 2008 for the new Birthing Inn, which proudly bears The Ladies Board name. In 2023, the organization completed an additional $1.2 million pledge in continued support of exceptional patient care.

More than 100 years later, The Ladies Board remains as committed as ever to strengthening healthcare, supporting caregivers, and serving the Loudoun County community with compassion, generosity, and heart.

History of the Ladies Board

For more than a century, The Ladies Board has been woven into the fabric of healthcare in Loudoun County. Since the founding of Leesburg Hospital in 1912, generations of dedicated volunteers, donors, and community members have come together with one shared purpose: caring for our neighbors.

When local leaders first envisioned a hospital for the community, they turned to The Ladies Board of Managers for support. Organized by local churches, the original Board helped make that vision a reality by raising funds, overseeing patient care needs, and providing essential housekeeping services for the new six-bed hospital, which opened in a rented home on Market Street in Leesburg.

From the very beginning, The Ladies Board represented the spirit of community generosity. Early members supplied bedding, kitchen equipment, food, and other necessities for patients and staff, while encouraging others throughout Loudoun County to contribute what they could. The Board also partnered with organizations such as The Leesburg Garden Club to grow and preserve vegetables for the hospital community.
